The Coalition to Stop the MPS Takeover is a coalition of 28 community, parent, union, educator, civil rights, religious, and student organizations. We are the largest education-focused coalition in Milwaukee since the desegregation movement in the 1970s. We are united around three principles:
- The Coalition meets at the NAACP offices, 2745 N. MLK Dr. All Coalition members and supporters are welcome to attend.
- For ongoing commentary on the campaign against the takeover read MPS school board member Larry Miller’s blog.
Coalition Updates:
The next Coalition meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 16 February, 4:30–6pm, at NAACP.
The agenda will include:
- Report from the Coalition delegation that met with the editors of the MJS
- Update on legislative situation
- Update on DPI threat to withhold $175 million in Title I funds
- Rescheduling the planned picket that had been originally scheduled for 2.15.10
- Presentation by MTEA on the “Opportunity Plan”
- announcements
- Read Lisa Kaiser of the Shepherd Express give an account of Who’s Pulling the MPS Takeover Strings.
- Read the letter School Board President Michael Bonds sent to Governor Doyle in response to the governor’s statements of 15 January.
We want to state our support in the need to stand united against any “compromise” that weakens the powers of the democratically elected school board.
Senator Coggs has confirmed with us that he will meet with Coalition members at 4:30 PM on Friday, January 15 at the offices of the NAACP at 2745 N. ML King Drive. All Coalition members and supporters are welcome to attend. We are still waiting on confirmation by Rep. Grigsby.
