The Coalition to Stop the MPS Takeover is a coalition of 28 community, parent, union, educator, civil rights, religious, and student organizations. We are the largest education-focused coalition in Milwaukee since the desegregation movement in the 1970s. We are united around three principles:

Oppose the mayoral takeover
Protect and defend voter rights
Invest in parent and community involvement in our schools
  • The Coalition meets at the NAACP offices, 2745 N. MLK Dr. All Coalition members and supporters are welcome to attend.
  • For ongoing commentary on the campaign against the takeover read MPS school board member Larry Miller’s blog.

We want to state our support in the need to stand united against any “compromise” that weakens the powers of the democratically elected school board.

Senator Coggs has confirmed with us that he will meet with Coalition members at 4:30 PM on Friday, January 15 at the offices of the NAACP at 2745 N. ML King Drive. All Coalition members and supporters are welcome to attend. We are still waiting on confirmation by Rep. Grigsby.

State Senate hearing on MPS School Reform shows significant community opposition to mayoral control.

Hundreds of people showed up Tuesday at the auditorium of MPS to testify against the proposed Mayoral Takeover. People were forced to sit through 3 1/2 hours of testimony from state legislators before the public was allowed to speak. People who signed up to speak at 10 AM were called up to speak at 4 PM. Even though many Coalition members had to leave by that time, during the last four hours of the hearing speakers against the proposal outnumbered those in favor by a 10 to 1 ratio.
